Maria Torp was educated at the Academy of Fine Arts between 2000 and 2007. Her works often start with a drawing or a sketch. Later, through a photograph, the work is arranged with real people in the lead roles that end up in the finished painting.

The paintings that result from this process are vivid and technically well-composed, and they unfold as if in a kaleidoscope of time, space and perspective. In terms of content, Torp uses classic as well as more mundane dramas, often centred around a female figure.
