The highly gifted French-German Albert Schweitzer – a trained doctor, organist, theologian and philosopher – established a jungle hospital in Gabon, West Africa, then a French colony, in 1913. His goal was to create a clinic and a system that could be maintained and continued by the country's indigenous population – without dependence on imported, high-tech equipment. Albert Schweitzer worked in Africa for the rest of his life and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953 for his lifelong efforts.
