The Russian-German painter Olga Beggrow-Hartmann studied at Staatliche Kunstakademie in Stuttgart where she was taught by Ferdinand Keller, and later lived and worked in St. Petersburg. Her focus was mainly on still lifes and on humoristic renderings of children much as the present painting. She initially exhibited at the Crystal Palace in Munich, and subsequently at the womens pavilion as well as in the Russian Exhibition at the 1893 Exposition in Chicago.
