Johann Salomon Wahl (b. Chemnitz 1689, d. Copenhagen 1765)

Portrait of Christian VI (1699–1746) wearing armour and carrying the Order of the Elephant. Under the royal crown at the bottom to the left an inscription: "Christian 6th King of Denmark. Anno 1732. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 140×110 cm. English period carved and gilded frame.

Provenance: The Second Marquis of Breadalbane to Tymouth Castle, his art collection. Label on the back with the following information: “Brought to Taymouth Castle, From the Marquis of Breadalbane's Apartments at Holyrood Castle May 16, 1860”. That might be the reason that the text on the painting is in English. The painting was intended for an English collection. Holyrood Palace is the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. John Campbell, 2nd Marquess of Breadalbane (1796–1862), was a Scottish nobleman and Liberal politician.
