Mads Westrup (b. Copenhagen 1984)

Untitled, 2012. Signed on the reverse. Mixed media on canvas. 30×24 cm. Unframed.

Provenance: Danish private collection.

Mads Westrup (b. 1984) approaches painting as an open and exploratory space in which intuition and immediacy play a decisive role. His practice is characterised by a willingness to challenge both his own working methods and the expectations traditionally associated with painting as a medium. Rather than striving for perfection or complete control, Westrup seeks an expression in which the work is allowed to develop freely and on its own terms.

Within his paintings, a tension emerges between control and surrender, between conscious decisions and the unforeseen possibilities that arise throughout the process. This openness lends the works a distinctive energy and presence, where the finished result appears less as a concluded statement and more as a space for experience, reflection, and sensory engagement.

Westrup’s works explore humanity’s relationship with freedom, knowledge, and self-understanding. While technological progress is often associated with the desire to overcome the limitations of nature, his paintings point in another direction. They invite the viewer to turn inward and explore the mental and emotional landscapes that art can reveal. The result is a body of work that balances the personal and the universal, creating space for new ways of experiencing both the artwork and oneself.
