Rita Kernn-Larsen (b. Hillerød 1904, d. Copenhagen 1998)

An afternoon rest. Signed Rita and dedicated to Bosse, 11 April 1936. Gouache on paper. Sheet size 27.5×23 cm.

Provenance: The artist's family.

In the late 1920s, Rita Kernn-Larsen's sister Esther Mangor (born Larsen) was divorced from her Norwegian husband and moved in with their mother in an apartment on Jacob Erlandsens Gade on Østerbro, Copenhagen. Here they lived with Esther's two daughters in a kind of “women's collective”. The drawing, which is a birthday present from Rita Kernn-Larsen to the niece Inéz, nick-named Bosse, shows Kernn-Larsen's mother and sister relaxing with a nap and newspapers, while the two nieces play with their dolls on the windowsill.
