Theodor Philipsen (b. Copenhagen 1840, d. s.p. 1920)

Two calves. Stamped with monogram and DK (Dansk Kunsthandel). Sculpture of patinated bronze. H. 29 cm. L. 52 cm.

With a few the exceptions, Theodor Philipsen made his sculptures between 1889 and 1907. The present sculpture, was most likely originally made in clay around 1905–1907, since Philipsen at this time also made an oil painting and two sculptures with almost the same position of the two calves. The two latter in Flemming Brix, Finn Therman Frederiksen og Svend Erik Lorentzen (BFL), A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Theodor Philipsens no. 637, no. 1725/4 og no. 1765.

The composition of the present sculpture is a variation of 1725/4, two calves in clay from a series of 6 figurines from 1906 entitled “Vore Husdyr” (Our Domestic Animals). See lot no. .... for another figurine from this series.

“Dansk Kunsthandel” at Nikolaj Plads in Copenhagen was an exclusive art trade with its own bronze foundry. It was founded by engineer and art collector Johannes Rump (1861–1932). Dansk Kunsthandel only existed for three years from 1917 to 1919 but it had a great impact on the modern Danish art. The present sculpture is probably produced by Dansk Kunsthandel on the basis of an original clay figure executed by the artist in the years 1905–7.
