New Zealander Edmund Hillary (1919–2008) and Nepalese Tenzing Norgay (1914–1986) were the first human beings to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953, but it wasn't until June 2 that the news reached the world. That same day, Queen Elizabeth II had been crowned in London and the announcement that a British subject had climbed the world's highest mountain added to the uplifting mood at a time when Britain was suffering from economic and political recession. Less than a week later, Edmund Hillary was knighted by the Queen.
This is an original b/w silver gelatin photograph from the 1950s, which has yellowed slightly. Two pin-holes, creased corner as well as a few pressure marks. Back stained and with slight discolouration. Furthermore normal signs of handling.
