Kristian Zahrtmann (b. Rønne 1843, d. Copenhagen 1917)

A portrait bust of burnt clay depicting the artist's sister, Bodil Zahrtmann (1866–1941), married to Mathias Hamborg Wilhjelm. Unsigned, dated 1870. H. 24 cm. A childr portrait of Bodil Zahrtmann is included. Unsigned. Pencil on paper. Sheet size 12.5×10 cm. (2).

Mentioned p. 96 in an extract from a letter, written by his mother in 1870: “[...] K. Z. har modelleret Bodil i Ler, som skal brændes hos Hjorth.” (K. Z. has made a model of Bodil in clay, which will be fired at Hjorth [Hjorth's workshop]). Reproduced p. 98 with the description “Buste i brændt ler modelleret af K. Z. efter søsteren Bodil Z. Rønne 1870.” (Bust made of burnt clay modelled by K. Z. after his sister Bodil Z. Rønne 1870.).

Provenance: The artist and thence by descent until today.

Condition

The bust: Minor marks and scratches. Imperfection due to the burning process. The drawing: The paper has turned slightly brown. Some discolouration. Examined in frame.
