William Sweetlove (b. Oostende 1949)
“Cloned French Bulldog”, 2006. Ed. 8. Resin and polyurea. H. 180 cm. L. 200 cm, W. 80 cm.
Provenance: Galleri GKM, Malmö.
William Sweetlove's artistic practice unites Dadaism with Surrealism and Pop Art. The result is often humorous, and at first glance his sculptures can seem quite kitschy. However, there is more than meets the eye in Sweetlove’s art, and a closer look at the artist’s background reveals the role of the works as a creative “antidote” to society's overproduction and consumption. With his various cloned animals, Sweetlove encourages us to increase our ecological awareness while reflecting on the consequences of climate changes that challenge humanity. For example, Sweetlove's cloned dogs often wear wellingtons as a comment on how the sea level is rising.
Sweetlove has participated in a wide range of exhibitions and art shows and is represented in galleries and museums all over the world. His works can also be found in several private art collections.
