Original black-and-white press photograph of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (1874–1965) in the cockpit of the Boeing 314 Clipper aircraft that brought him back to Britain on January 14, 1942 after a three-week visit to the United States. Back with agency stamp (partly hidden underneath telegram), attached news telegram, handwritten layout instruction, and stamped dates for newspaper publication (January 19, 1942, April 14, 1945, July 1, 1954). Oakwood frame with double glass. Visible size 18×18.5 cm. Frame size 27×27.5 cm.
For three weeks, from December 22, 1941, to January 14, 1942, Winston Churchill participated in the so-called First Washington Conference, hosted by US President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945). Among the most important decisions made by the two men were to make Germany's defeat the top priority of the war and to establish a Combined Chiefs of Staff to coordinate the military efforts of the United States and Great Britain. The Prime Minister's flight home was quite dangerous, as his plane was pursued by German aircraft along the way. This was concealed in the attached news telegram.
This is an original black-and-white silver gelatin press photograph from 1942, which appears with a crease in the lower right corner. Furthermore, normal signs of age and handling, including minor pressure marks and surface scratches. News telegram with discolouration and missing corner.
