Louiselund was a country estate located on the Schlei inlet, south of Schleswig (city). It belonged to Landgrave Carl of Hesse-Kassel, married to Landgravine Louise of Hesse-Kassel, née Princess of Denmark as daughter of King Frederikk V. The Landgrave was the commanding general and governor of the then Danish duchies of Schleswig-Holstein. The Landgrave couple had their winter residence at Gottorp Castle and spent their summers at Louisenlund, which was named after the Landgravine. One of their daughters, Princess Louise, married Duke Wilhelm of Glücksburg, and another, Princess Marie, married King Frederik VI of Denmark. Landgrave Carl of Hesse-Kassel had this coin struck in honor of his father-in-law and Louisenlund. The children of the Duke and Duchess of Glücksborg - the grandchildren of the Landgrave couple - also spent many summers here, including Duke Carl of Glücksborg, Duke Friedrich of Glücksborg, Duchess Friederike of Anhalt-Bernburg and King Christian IX of Denmark.
