Ancient Greece, Phoenicia, Shekel (Tetradrachm), Tyre, 117–116 BC (CY 10), laureate head of Melqart right / Eagle standing left on prow, 14.23 g, HGC 10.357, BMC 67–68, DCA Tyre 24 - an outstanding example, superbly centered, with a lovely toning and of the best style - very scarce thus.
The beautiful portrait shows the enigmatic, Phoenician god Melqart, who seems to be rooted in Ba'al but during the Hellenistic period gradually transforms into Heracles.
Ex. Apollo to Apollo Collection; Ex. CGF, Auction, March 1st, 2016.
