Carl Locher (b. Flensburg 1851, d. Skagen 1915)

“Midnatssol Isfjeld i Diskobugten”. An iceberg in the Disco Bay under the midnight sun. Signed and dated Carl Locher Isfjeld, Sarso, Midnat 30–6-6. Oil on canvas. 41×55.5 cm.

Carl Locher had a keen interest in ships, and painted, in addition to his many depictions from Skagen, several motifs from the many maritime expeditions he went on. One of these expeditions went to Greenland in 1906, which is when the present painting was done, and he participated as the official painter in the Royal Journey of 1907 (“Kongerejsen 1907”), which travelled to Iceland and the Faroe Islands (see cat. no. 100).

Provenance: King Christian X and Queen Alexandrine of Denmark. On the reverse a label from the royal couple's summer residence, Klitgaarden in Skagen, Inv. No. 19.

At Carl Locher's estate auction in 1916 (last section), there was a painting listed with the description 'Aften. Grønland. Sarsok' from 1906, with similar measurements and with the catalogue number 122. Locher has dated one of his letters to his daughter, Anna, 7. juli 1907, Sarsak. It is possible, that “Sarso” is another version (or mis-spelling) of “Sarsak”- and that it has later been read as “Sarsok”.
