John Ellicott (b. London 1706, d. s.p. 1772)

A George III ebony, gilt bronze and brass mounted striking clock with musical chimes, arch brass dial and a silvered subsidiary dial for strike-silent and a silvered chapter ring signed 'Ellicott London', the centre of the dial is finely matted and has a calendar aperture, Rococo spandrels to the corners and blue steel hands, movement with a repeat function, eight chiming bells and a separate striking bell. The brass-bound ebony case has flame finials and caryatids, the base ends with cast brass Rococo feet. Second half of the 18th century. H. 65 cm. W. 34 cm. D. 22 cm.

John Ellicott was one of the finest clockmakers of the 18th century. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1738. In 1762 he was appointed Clockmaker to the King.
