Helen Schou (b. Frederiksberg 1905, d. Charlottenlund 2006)

“Moder og Barn” (Mother and Child), c. 1943. Signed Helen Schou, stamped L. Rasmussen, Broncestøberi Kbhvn. Green patinated bronze. H. 175 cm.

The sculptor Helen Schou has left many lasting influences on Danish art history, but she is especially remembered for “Den Jyske Hingst” (The Jutlandic Stallion) in Randers and the equestrian statue of Christian X in Aarhus – both monumental works that stand as proud landmarks in the cityscape.

“Moder og Barn" (Mother and Child), which we here offer for sale, may be known by summer guests at the Bellevue Beach north of Copenhagen, where a version of the sculpture is part of the view towards the Sound.

Unlike Helen Schou's more imposing works, this sculpture is a quite unsentimental depiction of a proud, self-aware mother carrying her young child on her arm. The woman stands in a classical contraposto, placing her weight on her left leg, which allows her to rest her arm on the hip and at the same time emphasizing the body's strength.
