Fritz Petzholdt (b. Copenhagen 1805, d. Patras 1838)

A young Italian man standing. Study. Unsigned. Inscribed on the reverse: F. Petzholdt and “tilhører G. Collin” (owned by G. Collin). Oil on paper later laid on panel. Panel laid on the originally canvas. 34×24 cm.

Provenance: Judge G. Collin, brother-in-law of Fritz Petzholdt. It is his handwriting on the reverse. He made notes whenever he framed one of Petzholdt's paintings. Owned by the estate after the late Collin. Henry Tuxen, who made the list of the paintings by Petzholdt is a relative of the painter. Petzholdt was the brother of Tuxen's great-grandmother. Tuxen registered the paintings owned by the family, and G. Collin owned more than 42 paintings, that were sold after his death in 1886.

Condition

Originally the painting was oil on paper laid on canvas. At restoration the paper has been transferred from the canvas to a panel/masonite. This is loosely laid on the original canvas. When the paper was transferred to the panel there have been made some additional retouches especially along the edges.
