English painter, early-18th century

King George II of England (1683–1760) on horseback, wearing armor and holding a sceptre in his right hand. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 127×104 cm.

King George II had, among more children, Princess Marie and Princess Louise. Princess Marie married Landgrave Friedrich II of Hesse-Kassel and they became the parents of Landgrave Carl of Hesse-Kassel (1744–1836). Princess Louise married King Frederik V of Denmark and they became the parents of Princess Louise (1750–1831). Landgrave Carl and this last-mentioned Princess Louise were thus cousins on their mothers' side and they were married in 1766. It is obvious that the portrait of King George II may have been inherited from one of the sisters, Landgravine Marie or Queen Louise, and to this couple, as it depicted their common grandfather. It must have hung in either the Landgrave couple's winter residence, Gottorp Castle, or their summer residence, Louisenlund. From here it was inherited by their daughter, Duchess Louise of Glücksburg, married to Duke Wilhelm of Glücksburg.

Provenance: ”The Historical Collection of Four Princesses From the Cavalier House of Glücksburg Castle”. The cultural heritage after the sisters, Her Highness Princess Elisabeth of Ysenburg and Büdingen, née Princess of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (1945–2024), Her Highness Princess Irene of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (b. 1946), Her Highness Princess Margaretha of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (b. 1948), and Her Highness Princess Sibylla Ursula of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (b. 1955).
