Ivan Andreevich Winberg (b. Helsinki 1798, d. St. Petersburg 1851)

A miniature portrait of Tsar Nicholas I of Russia (1796–1855). Signed Winberg. Gouache on ivory. Oval. 4.5×3.2 cm. Danish Empire frame.

Tsar Nicholas I reigned over Russia from 1825 and was also King of Poland. He was best known for his anti-revolutionary policies in Europe, earning him the sobriquet “Gedarm of Europe”. The present miniature portrait is presumably from the 1830s in the Tsar's earlier years of government. Ivan Andreevich Winberg was a famous portrait miniaturist for the Imperial Russian family in the first half of the 19th century.

Provenance: Private Danish owner. The ownership before is unknown.

Condition
