Provenance: Circolo Scandinavo / Skandinavisk Forening i Rom (Inv. No. AI 16).

August Wilhelm Boesen was admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1831, where he studied history painting. However, after several years, Boesen chose to leave the Academy to devote himself to landscape painting. His first landscapes were from areas around Funen and Vejle, before he had the opportunity to paint more mountainous landscapes in Sweden and Norway, and later Switzerland. In 1845, he traveled to Italy, where he settled for two years and painted in Rome and the areas around Sicily.

It was in Rome he drew the present self-portrait, where we see Boesen slightly hidden behind the small glasses, but with an inquisitive gaze directly aimed at the viewer.
