Hans Svaning (b. Svanninge 1503, d. Ribe 1584)

Petrus Parvus Rosaefontanus - [Hans Svaning]: Refutation Calumnarium Cvivsdam Johannis Magni […]. Cph: Christoffer Barth 1560. 8vo. 160 leaves. With Anders Sørensen Vedel’s autograph initials on title page. Bound in later full vellum of old materials (Birgitte Dall).

The Danish historian and priest Anders Sørensen Vedel (1542–1616) translated the “Gesta Danorum” by Saxo Grammaticus into Danish (1575). He also published the influential “Hundredvisebogen” in 1591.

In this work the Danish historian Hans Svanning was first asked by the king to refute some harsh statements aimed at Denmark coming from Sweden. In 1561 the book was approved and ordered to print by the king. However before it was issued, second thoughts prevailed; the title page and preface were reprinted and the authorship assigned to the deceased professor in rhetoric P.P. Rosæfontanus.

LN #1547, Thesaurus #198; K.F. Plesner: “Danske Bogsamlere”, p. 141.

Provenance: Tage Langager, Flemming Erik Pedersen (1931–2020).
