Painter unknown, 19th century

Madonna and the Child with the priest and saint Ignatius of Loyola (c. 1491–1556). On his vestments, Loyola is wearing the symbol of The Society of Jesus (Jesuits), which he founded in 1534. Inscribed T. V. 1559. Oil on canvas. 84×64.5 cm.

The painting borrows from a composition of Titian in his “La Madonna con il Bambino e santa Maddalena”, also known as “Madonna Barbarigo” (c. 1530–1540, private collection).

Condition

Retouches. Some minor crackles and peelings. A small hole measuring less than 0.5 cm. Repairs / patches on the reverse. In need of cleaning.
