H. A. Brendekilde (b. Brændekilde 1857, d. Jyllinge 1942)

“Den arabiske ørken”. The Arabian Desert. Sign. H. A. B. Oil on canvas. 52×73 cm.

In 1890, Brendekilde traveled to Egypt and the Middle East.

Literature: Anne Christiansen, “Brendekilde. Liv og værk”, 2021, mentioned and reproduced p. 174. Here it says (in Danish): It was not only the people's life in the cities and oases - with the exotic vegetation and different livestock - in North Africa and the Middle East that fascinated Brendekilde, so did the barren desert landscape. He maintained the motif in a single painting, which he tried in vain to sell at auction in 1893, but it remained unsold until the estate auction in 1942. "

Provenance: H. A. Brendekilde's estate auction 1942.
