Erik Thommesen (b. Copenhagen 1916, d. 2008)

“Kvinde” (Woman). Signed Erik 1955. Oak wood. H. 84 cm.

Literature: Poul Vad: “Erik Thommesen”, Copenhagen, 1964, pl. 42. Literature: Henning Jørgensen: “Værkfortegnelse” (List of Works) in "Billedhuggeren Erik Thommesen” (The Sculptor Erik Thommesen), Holstebro Kunstmuseum, Kunsthallen Brandts & Bornholm's Museum of Art, 2001, cat. no. 174 as well as figure 38, ill. in colours p. 68.

Provenance: Acquired directly from Erik Thommesen in 1960 in his home and studio in Blistrup. Hence by descent in the family.

“From the beginning of the 1950s, Erik Thommesen's production had a pronounced evenness. There was still a difference between the more or lesser important works, but the youthful trials and experiments were behind him at this point, as well as the dead ends. Erik Thommesen knows what he wants, and he finds a way to express this (…) In several ways, a sense of community, love and humanity are expressed sculpturally, which can be perceived in the basic rhythm and the expansive form, just as the difference between female and male forms become more apparent. The first ones have more round shapes and gentle, sensual transitions between their planes and mass, while the male forms are stronger raised with upright, virile power contained in the organic form” (Henning Jørgensen: “Det menneskelige er det personlige” (The Human Aspect Is the Personal One) in "Billedhuggeren Erik Thommesen” (The Sculptor Erik Thommesen) p. 38.)
