Irene, 797–802, Constantinople, Solidus, crowned Irene holding globe and sceptre / crowned Irene holding globe and sceptre, DOC 1c, S 1599, 4.40 g, scratches in right reverse field.

With the gruesome blinding and death of her son Constantine VI, Irene became the first sole empress to rule the Byzantine state. The traditonal Solidi style with predecessors or associate ruler(s) on the reverse was changed to a new style with Irene on both sides.
