Edgar Mitchell: An original NASA colour offset photograph of the Apollo 14 lunar module, strongly illuminated by sunlight, as seen on the surface of the Moon on February 5th. 1971. Back with describing text. Photo size 20×25 cm. Frame size 33×43 cm.
The Apollo 14 Mission - headed by the pioneer Alan B. Shepard, the first American in space (May 5th. 1961) - was the eight manned mission within the Apollo Program and the third lunar landing. The goal was to explore the so-called Cone Crater, a small crater north of the much larger Fra Mauro Crater on the Moon's Near side.
Apollo 14 was launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on January 31st. 1971 with the astronauts Alan B. Shepard (leader) (1923–1998), Stuart Roosa (1933–1994) and Edgar Mitchell (1930–2016) aboard. The crew returned unharmed to earth on February 9th. During their voyage Shepard and Mitchell spent a total of 9 hours, 22 minutes and 31 seconds on the lunar ground. Roosa remained in orbit in the command module.
This is an original NASA colour offset photograph from 1971, which shows only very modest signs of handling.
