'ICH BIN EIN BERLINER'. In just four words, the phrase expressed the allegiance of John F. Kennedy and America to the bruised post-war Western Europe. The wall that in the summer of 1963 - itself a cold summer - encircled West Berlin had been erected less than two years earlier and the Cold War seemed more chilling than ever. It is against this background that the speech should be interpreted and the reason why it has remained one of the most important speeches of the 20th century. Contrary to popular belief, John F. Kennedy had written the speech himself.
This is an original b/w silver gelatin press photograph from 1963. Front with blue discolouration in lower right corner. Creased corner. Telegram on back has yellowed and is slightly damaged. Furthermore normal signs of handling.
