Ships from various nations - Danish, Swedish, English, French and American (Grand Union) flags - anchored outside Whampoa on the Pearl River with a view of the Whampoa pagoda. Watercolour on paper. Visible size 31×47 cm.
The first American vessel, the Empress of China arrived in Whampoa in 1784. Thereafter American ships were regular visitors to the Island thus from then on the present scene can be dated.
