Collecting watches is a journey that requires a lot of choices. Many good and bad decisions will be made as a collector matures. A developed collection is not necessarily like other developed collections, but one thing is sure: they will often include at least one complicated Patek Philippe watch.

The reference 5159G is interesting in many ways. What one usually looks at first is the dial. Although the watch has four hands and four apertures, it does not seem clumsy. The date display is elegantly shown in the center of the dial via a retrograde hand, whereas the rest of the calendar is shown in three apertures. At six o’clock is the moon phase indicator, showcasing probably the most romantic of all horological complications.

When turning to the case design, it seems as if the watch has a closed caseback. However, after some inspection, a hinge and a lip show, indicating that it has an officer-style caseback that allows inspection of the handmade and quite complex movement. This emphasizes the understated and unpretentious sense of luxury that surrounds this watch.

When the watch is not worn, it can be put to rest in the accompanying Patek Philippe box with a built-in watch winder. This makes sure that the calendar is always correct. And do not be afraid of having to take the watch to your watchmaker anytime soon – it has just been serviced by Patek Philippe in October 2023.
