Vasily Yakovlevich Grachev (b. Russia 1831, d. s.p. 1905)

A Russian gilt bronze sculpture with a shooting soldier using his horse as cover. Signed Grachev (in Cyrillic). C. F. Woerffel Bronze Froundy in St. Petersburg. L. 21.5 cm.

Provenance: The Danish General Lieutenant Jacob Frederik Marius Ernst (1820–1897). J. F. M. Ernst stayed from November 1855 to February 1856 at Sevastopol to follow the Crimean War (1853–1856). During his stay in Russia, he acquired the present sculpture. Hereafter, in direct line to the current Danish owner, who is General Lieutenant J. F. M. Ernst's great-great-grandchild.
