Celebrated photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto's 1991 portfolio “Time Exposed” presents a summation of his Seascapes series, begun in 1980 when he began to use his large-format camera to take technically complex, minimalist views of water, sky, and atmosphere at play with one another. Each image depicts a far-flung location around the world, stretching from the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans to the Mediterranean and Marmara Seas. The 51 lithographs in the portfolio offer a meditative viewing experience; dialogues between the seascapes point to questions of permanence, immateriality, and the boundaries of nature.
