Karl Isakson (b. Stockholm 1878, d. Copenhagen 1922)

Portrait of Mrs Bertha Brandstrup, 1914. Attested on the reverse by Viggo Madsen and Aage Roose. Oil on canvas. 107×73 cm.

Literature: Gustaf Engwall: “Karl Isakson”, Stockholm, 1944, probably no. 109.

Karl Isakson was a frequent guest at the sculptor Ludvig Brandstrup's home and in particular he formed a close friendship with Brandstrup's wife, Bertha. During Isakson's recurrent periods of depression and resentment, Bertha Brandstrup encouraged Isakson to continue his work and she repeatedly sat as a model for the young painter. Brandstrup's beautiful home in Valby was a permanent haven for Isakson over the years, as was the place where his friendship with Johannes Larsen began.
