A Roman marble fragment of a left foot with sandal. Roman Imperial Period, c. 1st-2nd century AD. L. 15 cm.

The foot appear to end where a robe would have reached. The sandal type is a stylized form of the more detailed sandal of the Chatsworth colossal marble foot. Same lozenge shape between big toe and index toe, pointed straps and side “studs”.

Provenance: J. A. Jerichau (1816–1883). Sold at the Jerichau estate sale in 1884, lot 177–182 “Fragments of feet with sandals”. Stated in bill. Professor C. Wilkens (1844–1929). Danish private collection. Acquired at Bruun Rasmussen Kunstauktioner in 2003, auction 727, lot 229.
