As an artist and sculptor, Einar Utzon-Frank was a pure aesthete and cultivator of beauty, and is considered by many as the main representative of the classicistic stream in Denmark. He was heavily inspired by Greek, Archaic and early Renaissance sculptures, as can be seen in the artist's passion for and obsession with formality, proportions and often untraditional posture motifs. In 1918, aged just 30, Einar Utzon-Frank became a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and, with this title, established the guidelines for the development of modernist sculpture in Denmark. Utzon-Frank's own production subsequently moved in the direction of monuments, of which this piece from 1927 is a prime example. The work was designed as a landmark for Copenhagen Harbour, but was never erected.
