Original black-and-white press photograph of American Walter Thornton (1903–1990), who, after the Wall Street Crash in October 1929, attempts to sell his Chrysler Imperial Roadster for $100. Back with agency and restriction stamps, handwritten layout instructions and notes, and stamped date of newspaper publication (May 10, 1943). Black painted wooden frame with double glass. Visible size 17×23 cm. Frame size 26×32 cm.
This photograph, reproduced in large numbers and used in countless newspapers and books over the years, has since the Wall Street Crash stood as an image of the meltdown that struck the New York Stock Exchange with fatal, immediate force at the end of October 1929 - and just days later, virtually the rest of the globe.
This is an original black-and-white silver gelatin press photograph from 1943 or earlier, which appears faded and with significant surface wear. All corners with corner creases.
