Elise Konstantin-Hansen (b. Frederiksberg 1858, d. Kolding 1946)

“Underup Kirke, set fra Vorbjerg” (Underup Church seen from Vorbjerg, Jutland). Signed and dated E. K. H. 1915. Oil on canvas. 46×72 cm.

Exhibited: Den Frie Udstilling 1916 no. 157.

As the daughter of the Golden Age painter Constantin Hansen (1804–1880), Elise Konstantin-Hansen was born into an artist's home, where she was taught by her father from an early age. She later supplemented her training with a period as a student of genre painter Christen Dalsgaard (1824–1907) and Skagen painter Lauritz Tuxen (1853–1927), and in 1885–86 she studied in Paris. In her artistic practice, she immersed herself in crafts, a field she cultivated throughout her life, and both here and in landscape painting, she particularly focussed on bird motifs and wildlife.

She received numerous awards including the Neuhausen Prize in 1885, from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts on several occasions and in 1916 to 1946 Sødring's scholarship.

Elise Konstantin-Hansen exhibited extensively - she made her debut at Charlottenborg in 1882 and exhibited there regularly until 1892. She also participated in the Nordic Industrial Exhibition and international exhibitions in Paris, Chicago and Munich, and in 1917 she had a solo exhibition at Dansk Kunsthandel.

Today, 51 of her works can be found in seven Danish museums.
