Provenance: Gift from Joseph Stalin and Minister of Foreign Affairs Maksim Litvinov to the Danish businessman and Finance Minister H. P. Hjerl Hansen (1870–1946) in 1923. H. P. Hjerl Hansen became director of The Siberian Company in 1904 with the main purpose to export Siberian butter to Denmark. The company also supplied Russian farmers with agricultural machinery. H. P. Hjerl Hansen stayed several times in Russia until 1917, when the company was nationalized by the Soviet Union. However, the company had great influence on the Soviet agriculture development, and in 1923 Stalin wished H. P. Hjerl Hansen to return as director for the company, employed by the Soviet Union. Litvinov visited Copenhagen in 1923 with different purposes. One of them was to convince H. P. Hjerl Hansen to return to The Siberian Company, and the present dagger was Stalin’s gift, which he hoped would bring back H. P. Hjerl Hansen. However, he rejected the Soviet suggestion but kept the dagger. Thence by descent to H. P. Hjerl Hansen's grandson with residence in Denmark until today.
