Gottfred Eickhoff (b. Frederiksberg 1902, d. Copenhagen 1982)

“Guapa”. Signed Eickhoff 42. Foundry mark BB. Bronze. H. 71 cm.

Literature: Anne Hald: “Gottfred Eickhoff. Dialog med billedhuggeren og tegneren”, ill. and mentioned p. 101–104. The figure is depicted in different variations as models for the large sculpture, which is placed in Øregårdsparken.

“Guapa” is considered one of Gottfred Eickhoff's masterpieces. In the big format (H. 195) the figure is placed in more significant public spaces: At Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, in Øregårdsparken, Hellerup and in the gardens in front of Roskilde Cathedral.

The figure is inspired by Ernest Hemingway's novel “For Whom the Bells Toll” and the freedom fighter Guapa in particular. In relation to the German occupation of Denmark, Guapa was seen as a symbol of strength despite repression.
