It was the printer and newsagent Herbert Ingram (1811–1860) who noticed that when a newspaper included woodcuts their sales increased. Then he desided to publish a lavishly illustrated but relatively inexpensive magazine - “Illustrated London News”. The first magazine was printed in May 1842 and became a big success. With its 16 pages and 42 woodcuts it included pictures of the war in Afghanistan, a train crash in France, a steam-boat explosion in Canada and a fancy dress ball at Buckingham Palace, and it sold more that 25.000 copies. Within a few months it was selling more than 65.000 copies a week. Encouraged by the success Ingram decided in 1848 to start a daily newspaper, the “London Telegraph”. Today the “Illustrated London News” is one of the finest pictorial examples of a historical and social record of British and world events illustrated with maps, scenic views and portraits of the time. The “Illustrated London News” became the first periodical to make extensive use of woodcuts and engravings, and also the first to use photographs.
