Diana Scultori (also known as Diana Mantuana) is one of the earliest known female engravers. She was born in Mantua, Italy, and learned the engraving technique from her father, Giovanni Battista Scultori, who was a sculptor and engraver.

In 1568, at a time when this was highly unusual for a woman, she received her first public recognition as an engraver, when she made engravings for Giorgio Vasari's second edition of Le vite de 'più eccellenti pittori, scultori e architettori (The Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects).

Diana Scultori was also the first female engraver to sign her prints. In 1575, when she moved to Rome, Diana was granted a papal privilege, which gave her intellectual property rights over her works and made it illegal to reproduce, copy, or sell them without permission so that she could control the distribution and attract the right buyers.

Her oeuvre consists of religious and mythological motifs. The last known print of her dates from 1588. The present work is one of many engravings she made after the works of the artist Giulio Romano.
