Original b/w press photograph of a statue of Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun (c. 1345–1323 BC), found in his tomb in the Valley of the Kings outside Cairo on November 4, 1922. Shot and developed simultaneously. Back with agency stamp and handwritten pencil notes. Black lacquered wooden frame with double glazing. Visible size 22×18 cm. Frame size 32×28 cm.

On November 4, 1922, British archaeologist and egyptologist Howard Carter (1874–1939) unearthed the intact tomb of ancient boy king Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings near Cairo, Egypt. This remarkable discovery, unveiling a treasure trove of artifacts - including the statue pictured above - from c. 1323 BC, the year of the young pharaoh’s death, became the most talked about world news in late 1922 and early 1923.

Condition

This is an original b/w silver gelatin photograph from November/December 1922, which appears with normal handling marks. Back somewhat yellowed and with two ink stains (?). Patinated frame with minor chips on edges.
