Johnny Madsen is a musician, songwriter and painter who lives on the island of Fanø. He has, among other things, released albums and worked together with Allan Olsen, Lars Lilholt, Peter Belli, Nanna Lüders and Billy Cross in bands such as Dalton and Hobo Ekspressen. Madsen has enjoyed great success with his sound, blues-based music, and his often completely surreal lyrics in the West Jutland dialect. With his band, comprised of Knud Møller on guitar, Henrik From on drums and Niels Mogensen on bass and guitar, he is known for the intense concerts he gives.
The Artist Johnny Madsen
Johnny Madsen has been painting pictures for many years – and most recently with such success that he has his own gallery, Madsens Galleri, in Nordby on Fanø. He is a painter in the expressionist tradition, and his colourful works, most often painted in acrylics, are a timeless portrayal of unnamed people or depictions of human types. The artist has himself stated that the inspiration for his paintings often comes when he’s on the edge of the stage overlooking his eager audience. Madsen’s ability to create works with both local and universal appeal has made him a sought-after artist for collectors and art lovers alike.
Johnny Madsen’s Hair and Johnny Madsen’s Street
Johnny Madsen, who is not exactly known for his beautiful and well-groomed locks, launched his very own shampoo, deodorant and hand soap in 2017. In addition to the shampoo, the range features a rock’n’roll-on deodorant, the so-called trucker’s bath, as well as a liquid hand soap, which is available in packaging with four different Madsen motifs. Johnny Madsen is one of the few living Danes who has a street named after him. The street he grew up on, Tværvej, has been renamed Johnny Madsens Vej. The street sign was stolen shortly after it was installed.
Johnny Madsen at Exhibition
Madsen has exhibited his works in several places, including in his own gallery on Fanø, and at the Jens Nielsen and Olivia Holm Møller Museum in Holstebro. There have also been solo exhibitions at Kvægtorvet, Odense 2007; Denise Bibro Fine Art, New York 2009 and Gallery 7, Frederikshavn. Madsen’s works hang at several official Danish buildings, including the Danish Embassy in Washington and the Danish Consul General’s office in New York, as well as in a group room at Christiansborg.
