Coins, Medals & Banknotes

The department valuates and provides advice on coins, medals and paper money. This covers both entire collections and individual numismatic rarities.

At Bruun Rasmussen, we are the numismatics hub of the entire Bonhams global network of auction houses. Our founder Arne Bruun Rasmussen was himself a passionate numismatist, so coins have been part of our history and auctions since the auction house was founded in 1948. Today we hold Online Coin Auctions every other Sunday and Live Auctions featuring the most valuable items twice a year in Copenhagen. The prices at our auctions range from DKK 600 to many millions. All items up for auction are presented with photographs and descriptions at bruun-rasmussen.dk, and they are also exhibited at the preview prior to the auction.

The department consists of a strong, experienced team of specialists who are experts in coins, medals and banknotes from the past 2,500 years. We value and sell both individual items and entire collections, and we present a comprehensive selection of rare and historic coins from all over the world at every auction. Our focus is broad and includes everything from Antiquity (Greek, Roman and Byzantine), the Viking Age and Anglo-Saxon coins to numismatics from Scandinavia, Germany, Great Britain and China – not to mention gold coins, other world coins from before 1800 and banknotes from before 1930. Numismatic literature, coin cabinets, ethnographic means of payment, tokens, advertising coins, jetons etc. are also part of the selection at our auctions.

If you are considering selling coins, medals or banknotes at our auctions, we are here to help you with everything in the process from the first valuation to the final hammer price. As part of Bonhams’ global network, we market the auctions to a large number of passionate collectors from all over the world, thus achieving the market’s highest hammer price for you as the seller. Please contact us to find out more about your options – or use our online valuation service.
