International auction at Bredgade

Eckersberg, Salto, parrots and PH – come to the auction at Bredgade, where we will be offering a selection of art, antiques, design and jewellery.

Older paintings and antiques

At Bruun Rasmussen, we’re welcoming the spring with a major international auction at Bredgade. Some 940 items will be going under the hammer, and the highlights include C.W. Eckersberg’s masterful seascape from 1824 with its circular format – as if the motif is seen through a marine telescope.

Also worth a special mention are a colossal 19th century chandelier and a rare porcelain dinner service depicting colourful parrots that exited the kilns of Meissen in around 1740. The dinner service comes from the collection of the legendary founder of Nordisk Film, the late Director General, Ole Olsen.

Modern paintings and Nordic design

With Pablo Picasso’s graphic portrait “Vollard et son chat” from 1960, the auction delves into the rich art scene that unfolded in Paris in the early 1900s. It depicts the most influential art dealer of the day, publisher Ambroise Vollard, an avid exponent of avant-garde art who did much to assist its dissemination.

The auction also offers a unique insight into Axel Salto’s diversity with the largest selection ever seen – from oversize vases and giant heads to stoneware in his famous rippled, sprouting and budding style, including several works from the major retrospective exhibition “Det Brændende Nu” (the burning now) at the Danish Museum of Art & Design in 1989.

Another of the great Danish names at the auction is Poul Henningsen, who grew up in the early days of electricity and, from a very young age, began to come up with complicated theories on “the right light”. Two “Spiral Lamps”, designed in 1942 – one of the most spectacular designs to result from his light theories – light up the auction.

Auction: 26 February - 7 March at Bredgade 33 in Copenhagen
