Frits Henningsen (b. 1889, d. 1965)

Freestanding two seater highback sofa with mahogany legs. Sides, seat, back and integrated armrests upholstered with original patinated red leather, fitted with brass nails. This example made 1940s by cabinetmaker Frits Henningsen. L. 152 cm.

Model presented at The Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition at Designmuseum Danmark in 1936.

Literature: Grete Jalk [ed.]: “40 Years of Danish Furniture Design”, vol. 1, ill. p. 245.

The highback sofa by Frits Henningsen with its straigth lines and boxy form stand in sharp contrast to the almost whimsical “Dancing Chair”. Still, it remains among a handful of his models that hold a universal appeal. The sofa with its characteristic internal armrests allow the illusion of creating an intimate space for two people engaged in meaningful conversation.
