Benjamin Wolff (b. Danmark 1790, d. s.p. 1866)

My Elephant and other sketchbook studies from a journey to Benares during the month of March, 1824. A small collection of sketchbook drawings including topographical views from the surroundings of Benares; The Observatory of Benares, a Mosque in Mirzapur and Ghats at Mirzapur. Charming firsthand observations by the amateur artist - an account of what seems to be a journey by boat and elephant to Benares during the month of March, 1824. Pencil. All on Whatman papers. 160×150 mm – 250×370 mm. (14)

Almost all of Benjamin Wolff’s autograph drawings are generally signed or embossed with his collectors mark; A Fivepointed Crown with initials BW (Lugt 420). The latter was probably applied upon Wolff’s return to Denmark – perhaps in connection with a growing ambition to build a collection. A few exceptions are however seen in his personal notebooks where unmarked drawings and prints were inserted to accompany the travelers written observations.
