Select Views in India, drawn on the spot, in the years 1780, 1781, 1782, and 1783, and executed in aqua tinta, by William Hodges. London 1786. Imperial folio (595×475mm). Benjamin Wolff’s Collection of printed views included a small but choice selection of publications. Plates from Thomas Daniell’s Views of Calcutta (1786–1788) and Fraser’s Views of Calcutta and its Environs (1824) were sold in these rooms November 2016. The crown of his collection of printed views is however the 48 aquatints published in William Hodges’ Select Views in India. Hodges’ was the first to paint the Indian landscapes from nature and on-site. Others before him had provided a fantasized view of India. The aim and idea of capturing the observed as it was seen was certainly shared and practiced by the avid amateur Benjamin Wolff. Provenance: Major John B.
