Lucie Rie (b. Wien 1902, d. London 1995)

Porcelain vase decorated with pale reddish brown and grey glaze with a few green and rose elements. Exterior's upper part with spirals. Marked monogram. Made 1980–1981. Unique. H. max. 25 cm.

Lucie Rie came to England as a refugee in 1938 at the age of 36. Before this, she had studied with Michael Powolny in her native city of Vienna. She later became one of England's most cherished ceramicists in the post-war era, and she is today known worldwide for her noteworthy, yet never intrusive, bowls and vases. Rie's design is generally characterized by being strong, spartan and simple, which has made her an exponent of Modernist and innovative ceramics.
