Provenance: In the collection of Danish sculptor Hanne Varming. She sometimes used the capital as support for creating her smaller sculptures or as a table. Acquired in 1990 from Kunsthallen Kunstauktioner, Copenhagen, auction 396, lot. no. 427. The capital order is a derivation of both the Corinthian order with it's broad tier of acanthus leaves and of Egyptian orders with slender palm leaves. Although parallels are scarce similar capitals can be found in Leptis Magna, the Severian forum. However, the order can be traced back to Athens possibly in connection to the Tower of the Wind constructed in 2nd-1st century BC (dating is disputed). In the publication The Antiquities of Athens first published in 1762 by Stuart and Revett, they found fragments of the order by the Tower of the Wind and published a profile of the capital, thence called Tower of the Wind Order. Their publication was greatly influential on neoclassical architecture and the order was used a.o. in the building of Temple of the Winds, Mount Stewart, Ireland.
