Vilhelm Arnesen (b. Flensburg 1865, d. Copenhagen 1948)

Prince Carl and Princess Maud of Denmark leaving Copenhagen heading for Oslo on board the Danish Royal Yacht Dannebrog as King Haakon VII and Queen Maud of Norway. Signed and dated Vilh. Arnesen 1905. Oil on canvas. 48×70 cm.

When Norway seceded from Sweden in 1905, Prince Carl (1872–1957) and Princess Maud (1869–1938) of Denmark were elected King and Queen of the independent Norway.

The couple were both grandchildren of King Christian IX of Denmark, and he himself received the Norwegian deputation, who asked for permission to appoint the young couple to be King and Queen of Norway. They then sailed to Oslo on the Danish Royal Yacht Dannebrog, which is shown on this painting, along with a convoy of warships and other vessels with flags.

A painting with identical motif by Vilhelm Arnesen is owned by the Norwegian Royal Family.
